Defensive wall of Karasis

Possibly the physically hardest day in my life...I needed Reuben's rock climbing skills several times.

We arose at 430 am and we're dropped at the Izmir airport for a 7am flight to eastern Turkey, the city of Adana. We picked up the rental car and drove an hour east to the mountains and began a 10:30am climb to the top of a hill like no other. a few trails, but mainly pushing our way through a forest of pines, holly bushes, and junipers, following the goat droppings to the top. For about 4 hours. Armed with GPS, camera, and a half liter of water. Whew! In 97degree heat, I could have used a gallon. We did stash anothe 1.5 Liters 1/4 of the way up at a goat corral....

Karasis was a Hellenistic fortress atop a huge mountain, overlooking a fertile valley below. It is built on three levels and just when you think you reached the end of the climb, there was more to climb and see. We did make it almost all the way down when I discovered that the GPS WAS NOT WITH ME! ack!  I climbed back up 1/4 of the way to the goat corral to find it. Oh murder (as Tus would have said). It was good to start the descent again, and get back to my water bottle.

Here are a few pics from the day...
